An original work in oils on canvas.

‘North Shields Fish Quay Circa 1904’

‘North Shields Fish Quay Circa 1904’ is a painting in oils on stretched canvas with palette knife by artist Mark Taylor.  Based in the heart of the North Shields Fish Quay, Mark has been creating artworks for over 20 years taking inspiration from the North East coastline and industrial heritage.

The work depicts a sepia-toned historical view of the long-gone herring industry and thriving businesses of the fish quay.  The view comprises local landmark, the High Lighthouse, and recognisable fishing boats of the past.  The perspective of the piece emphasizes the contrast between the business owners’ homes above in Dockwray Square, and the Trinity Buildings and the lifestyles of the fish salesmen working along the Quay. Visible in the lower quay are a multitude of skilled workers including sail makers, fishermen repairing nets, merchants, and the horses and carts distributing the catch to the wider area.

Depicted are boats of the Tyne fishing fleet on the River Tyne: Great Yarmouth, Leith, and Arbroath.  In the foreground is the White Fish Market.
